Bank Indonesia is concerned that
82% of Indonesia’s rural population do not hold a bank account. A
drive to increase the number of account holders began in February, but
it yielded ‘only’ 480,000 new customers whereas they were hoping to
attract over a million.
It would be interesting to know exactly how rural people
actually handle their finances, don’t you think? I suppose that income
flows are more steady because there are several harvests in a year, so
there is not such a big need to save ahead of long periods of no
income. Perhaps they prefer different ways of saving, such as physical
gold (if that’s so, they’ll be cashed up now). Certainly, interest
rates are low compared to what they have been and since so many banks
failed during the Asian financial crisis, a bank deposit is not a great
investment.
I’ll be doing some research on this, so please let me know if you can shed more light on it.
